Husky Summer Weekend

The first Husky Summer Weekend was a giant success. Alumni hosted 30 parties across the nation. Over 2,700 Huskies played golf, went to amusement parks, braved hurricane winds, ate barbecued salmon, and had a Husky good time.

Angela, '93, and Derek, '94, '95 Doell arranged the Alaska party. Angela wrote: “Anchorage kicked off Husky Summer Weekend on Thursday, August 12, with a Washington Wine Tasting at Glacier Brewhouse Restaurant. Everyone enjoyed four delicious wines paired with a four-course meal. Altug Bal, manager of the restaurant, gave an incredible education on wine and wine tasting. We owe a big thanks to Altug for speaking, the Glacier Brewhouse for serving us delicious food, and the Brown Jug for providing the wines.”

We plan to move our events around the state in coming years to facilitate wider participation…Interestingly, several families also picnicking stopped to speak with us—including a current UW student!

Nebraska
Melissa Maday, '01, planned the Nebraska Husky Summer Weekend party and wrote: “We planned a pool party and picnic. Unfortunately, it was too chilly to swim, but we still had a lot of food. We visited over picnic tables and learned about what everyone had been doing since their UW days, and how we all ended up in Nebraska. It was interesting to hear everyone's stories and memories from their school days. We started making plans to do a football viewing party to hopefully interest other local Huskies.” Thirteen Husky fans braved the cool weather for this first time event.

New York, New York
Jessica Handy, '93, organized the NY Husky Summer Weekend party and wrote: “Although the weather forecast for Sunday afternoon had us nervous that sailing would not be an option, the rain stopped, the skies cleared (well, sort of), and the prediction for winds of up to 40 knots dropped…The Pioneer Schooner, built in 1885, was the perfect size for our group and the crew was so nice. We ate hors d'oeuvres, drank mostly Washington State wine, and when the sales were hoisted and we were on our way, we popped open the champagne. Many of the UW huskies, friends, and families helped hoist the sails. Some of us drove the ship! All 31 of us enjoyed the tour around Governor's Island and the close-up view of the Statue of Liberty.

Guests enjoyed the scenic location, fresh King Salmon flown in from Seattle, and other BBQ fare.
