2008 Homecoming

2008 Pride in 5 Contest Rules

Here’s a chance to showcase your Husky Pride—a very brief snippet of it, anyway. Take a tiny bite out of your 15 minutes of fame by entering the UWAA’s “Pride in 5” competition. Submit a 5-second video showing us your true colors (provided they’re purple and gold, of course) between Sept. 10 and Oct. 13. Prizes will be awarded, and the winning entry will be announced at the 2008 Homecoming Rally.

Why enter? Well, the top 3 video get cash and everyone who enters is eligible to win one of three $50 gift cards to University Book Store. All the finalists will also be shown at the 2008 Homecoming Rally and on the Huskytron during the Homecoming football game, assuring your eternal glory. Those are nice, but, really, it's all about Husky Pride.

How to Enter

Step One - Watch and learn
Check out this video for some Pride in 5 examples. You'll laugh. And as they say, laughter's the best medicine for getting those creative juices flowing. Or something like that. Anyways, enjoy:

Step Two - Go for it, Scorcese!
Grab a camera and show us your Husky pride. Be creative. Be zany. Do it alone or with a hundred of your closest friends. Whatever you do, keep it short and keep it clean.

Need some inspiration? Just like Tarantino, it's OK if you get some ideas by watching the classics. Watch the winning 2007 Pride in 5 video below (by Jon Axell) or browse through all the 2007 finalists.

Step Three - Get it on the Information Superhighway
Upload your video to YouTube. You'll need a YouTube account. But it'll be worth the price (free). Your 5-second masterpiece will take its place in the YouTube Hall of Fame along with the Dramatic Chipmunk, Pac-Man at UW and Miss South Carolina.

Step Four - Get in the Group
This is key, so pay attention. After your video is uploaded, go to the UWAA's Pride in 5 Group on YouTube, join the group and then add your video to the group. That's where we're collecting 'em. After you add it, we'll approve your video so all the world can see it. We'll also send you a message asking for your contact info—in case you win!

Step Five - It's judging time
The UW Alumni Association will narrow down the field and 10 finalists will be contacted so we can get higher-quality version of their videos (YouTube is nice, but doesn't look too hot projected on a wall in Red Square—see Step Six). A panel of celebrity judges who are UW alumni will decide the top three, and those winners will have their videos shown on the Huskytron during the Homecoming game.

So who’s judging, you ask?

  • Angie Mentink, ’97, Fox Sports anchor
  • Elise Woodward, ’97, KJR sports radio host

Keep checking back as we announce more Pride in 5 judges!

Step Six - Come to the Rally! Glory could be yours! Plenty of purple and gold for everyone!
We'll announce the top three videos and screen the finalists at the UWAA's 5th Annual Homecoming Rally in Red Square on Friday, Oct, 17 at 8 p.m. Bring your friends. And their friends, too!

You'll get to see the top videos and much more: a performance by the Husky Marching Band, free food, fun giveaways, a little rowdiness, camaraderie and good cheer (from the Husky Cheer Squad, specifically, but also in general). Emceed by a local celebrity, the 2008 rally will also feature the announcement of the Homecoming Royalty and Court.

The Prizes
The top 3 videos will earn their creators some cold, hard cash:
1st place: $200
2nd place: $100
3rd place: $75

As a special bonus, everyone who submits a video will be entered to win one of three $50 gift cards to the University Book Store. That's right—even if your video isn't exactly Oscar-quality, you can still win a few bucks!
