National Champions!

Congratulations to Husky Softball and Men's Crew!

What a week it was for Husky athletics!

Just four days after the UW softball team captured its first national championship with a thrilling 3-2 victory over top-ranked Florida, the men's crew team swept the eights at the 107th IRA Championship Regatta to claim its third straight team title and sixth since it was first awarded in 1952.

That's three national championships for the Huskies in 2008-09. Washington's women's cross country team went undefeated on the year and won its first team title in November. Congratulations to the coaches, players, trainers and staff of all three championship teams. Unbelievable job, Huskies!

About the Softball Team

Danielle Lawrie

Anchored by National Player of the Year Danielle Lawrie, who was named the tournament's MVP after striking out 48 in six complete games, the No. 3 Huskies (51-12) rallied from two runs down in the top of the first inning to sweep No. 1 Florida in the best-of-three NCAA championship series. Lawrie, a junior who took last year off to pitch for the Canadian Olympic team, struck out the final two batters in dramatic fashion to capture the softball program's first national title.

About Men's Crew

Washington swept all three eights for the first time since 1997 to win the team title at the 107th IRA Championship Regatta in Gold River, Calif. It was the third straight team title for the UW and sixth since it was first awarded in 1952.

In the varsity eight final, the Huskies overcame an early deficit with a late-race surge. California and Stanford jumped to the front of the pack but the UW kept its cool, battled ahead and took the lead with about 100 meters left. It was the 15th national title for the UW varsity eight.
