Husky Career Lunch

Tips for Lunch Participants

The Husky Career Lunch is an opportunity for UW students and recent grads to connect and chat informally with UW alumni and friends of the University serving as table hosts.

Whether or not the table hosts have experience with exactly the type of position or organization that most interests you, they represent valuable resources as you consider your career direction and next steps.

We suggest beginning the conversation at the tables with each registrant introducing him/herself including whether they’re a current student or '07 grad, UW major and brief statement about their interest in this table category.

Then the table host(s) should introduce him/herself including their current position and organization and brief statement about why they volunteered for this event. The table host might also ask each participant to give a brief response to an "ice breaker" question such as: “What would be a dream job for you?” or “What is your favorite place on the UW campus?” or “What is your favorite UW tradition?”

For the remainder of the conversation, following are some questions that participants might ask and table hosts might address:

  • What is the typical educational background for work in your field?
  • Can internships or volunteer opportunities contribute to a career in your field?
  • Describe your current position and organization. What is a typical day like?
  • What are some other common positions in your field?
  • How did you look for work? What are some of the best job search strategies in your field?
  • If this is not your first position, talk about your career path . . . how you got started, and how you transitioned to the next step.
  • What does it take to be successful in your field? Personal qualities? Skills? Knowledge?
  • What suggestions do you have regarding how I can make additional contacts in your field?
