CAREER CONNECTIONS HELP

Guidelines for getting the most from the Husky Career Network
(formerly "Career Connections")

Do:

  • Narrow your search based on your background and goals. A few quality contacts are much better than many sloppy ones.
  • Do some advance preparation about the contacts that most interest you and their organizations.
  • Proofread all email messages, notes and letters.
  • Be sensitive to the schedule and time constraints of the contacts.
  • Offer specific information about your background, strengths and goals.
  • Accept what each contact has (and wants) to offer. It is more valuable than you know!
  • Ask for referrals to others who might assist you.
  • Follow-up to thank your contact.

Don't:

  • Ask a contact for a job or internship.
  • Ask a contact for leads for jobs/internships.
  • Rush to put together a resume.
  • Expect a contact to critique your resume.
  • Expect a contact to have a long conversation or ongoing relationship with you.

Questions/problems: send e-mail to accmail@u.washington.edu.
