UW Executive Vice President Weldon Ihrig (at right center, with back to camera) tells of the charge he received when first hired by President McCormick: "Don't let the cherry trees die on my watch."

UW President Richard L. McCormick thanks the Class of '59 for giving "this unique gift" to the University.

Brewster Denny, '45, descendant of Seattle pioneers, rings UW's ceremonial bell to mark the planting of the tree on the Quad.

Lex Gamble, '59 (left), and Dixie Porter, '59 (right), take their turns placing soil at the base of the cherry tree.

Diane Gamble, '59 (left), and Dixie Porter, '59 (right), add their spades' worth of dirt to the tree's base.

From left to right, Misty Shock, '99, and Benjamin, '97, and Margaret Lukoff observe the ceremony. Margaret and Ben purchased this first cherry tree in memory of their parents, Drs. Young-Soon, '74, and Fred Lukoff, who both passed away in 2000. Fred Lukoff was a professor in the Department of Asian Languages & Literature at the UW from 1964-1989 and Young-Soon Lukoff, '74, was at the UW Medical School from 1985-2000.
