The Inside Scoop: From the desk of Chuck Blumenfeld
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: We couldn’t do what we do, as successfully as we do it, without the support and dedication of our volunteers. Year in, year out, you’re there when we need you. And this year was no exception. More...
UW Coaches Tour: Volunteers Make the Difference
A hearty “thank you” and round of applause to all of the incredible volunteers who helped make this year’s UW Coaches Tour and Husky Insider Banquet a rousing success. Coaches Tour, a regional scholarship fundraiser now in its 37th year, has brought in more than $260,000 for UW student scholarships over the past five years. This year, 15 scholarships of $2,000 each were awarded from last year’s proceeds.
Volunteers play an invaluable role in Coaches Tour, which begins with a fun day of golf and is followed by the Husky Insider Banquet, where Dawg fans of all ages rub elbows with Husky coaches and get the inside scoop on everything purple and gold. At each of this year’s tour stops –Tacoma, Spokane, Everett, Bellingham, Yakima, Port Orchard and Longview – volunteers helped with decorations, registration, raffle tickets, challenge holes and more. Some volunteers work year-round to line up sponsors and prizes, and to coordinate the program and banquet.
So thanks to all of the dedicated volunteers who devoted their time and energy to this year’s UW Coaches Tour. We couldn’t do it without you!
Join the fun of 2008 Husky Summer Celebration!
What do salmon barbecues, baseball outings, and a freshman sendoff on Waikiki Beach have in common? They’re all part of the 5th annual Husky Summer Celebration, a series of special events and programs hosted and planned by alumni clubs and chapters across the country. And you can be part of the fun.
Nearly 20 alumni groups have planned events for alums, current and incoming UW students, parents and friends of the university. Thousands of Huskies nationwide will gather for an afternoon or evening of summer fun that also celebrates the purple and gold, with all proceeds from each event going toward UW scholarships.
Looking for a volunteer activity this summer? These local events are perfect opportunities for your time and talent to help make each celebration a standout. Plus, you’ll get to bask in Husky pride and network with fellow alums in your area.
So come out and take in the sun, some fun, and reconnect with the University of Washington this summer. Find an event near you and join the party!
Have a Ball at Husky Night with the Mariners
Join us for Husky Summer Celebration Night with the Mariners on Friday, July 18, and get discounted tickets along with a limited-edition Huskies/Mariners T-shirt. Plus, the first 25,000 game fans receive a Felix Hernandez bobblehead. That makes two great giveaways in one evening, along with a chance to cheer on the M’s with fellow Huskies. Is this fun or what?
It’s just our way of saying thanks to you, our volunteers, for the help and support you so generously give year after year. Truly, we couldn’t do what we do without you.
At last year’s Husky Night with the Mariners, starting pitcher Jarrod Washburn allowed two runs over six innings and J.J. Putz picked up his 23rd save of the season as the M’s rolled to a 5-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. With Huskies again rooting on the M’s, another victory may be in store. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to cheer on the Mariners and show your Husky pride. Space is limited, so sign up today.
Another Year Well Done Thanks to You!
It’s hard to believe another year has come and gone, but what an amazing year it’s been! So many of you came together to make our most valuable events and programs even more of a success. Your efforts have allowed countless UW alums and supporters to experience the best the UW Alumni Association has to offer.
From Homecoming and Dawg Dash in the fall to Washington Weekend and Coaches Tour in the spring, 2007-08 showed once again how enthusiastically the UWAA strives to connect the UW alumni community. Career Discovery Week, Husky Summer Celebration, Finals Bites and everything in between – we couldn’t do it without you, our devoted volunteers.
On behalf of the UW Alumni Association and the entire UW alumni community, we extend our warmest thanks for all you’ve done this past year.
Let’s make 2008-09 even better!
Highlights of 2007-'08
A brief look back at some special events from this past year:
Washington Weekend, held April 24-26 on all three UW campuses. The university’s annual open house, Washington Weekend gave alums, students, friends and the general public an opportunity to experience the awe of the University of Washington. Open houses, class reunions, tours, talks, live entertainment and Husky sporting events were all a part of the fun.
The Japanese-American Celebration, on May 18, 2008, at Kane Hall, honored the 450 Japanese-American students who were forced to leave the UW in 1942 and relocate to internment camps after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. About 200 former UW students or their family members attended the ceremony and received honorary diplomas 66 years after leaving the university.
