Computer Disposal
**Please note change** Effective March 15, 2006 Surplus Property will be responsible for appropriately purging all data from computers and electronic storage devices.
Departments that are surplusing their computer equipment or electronic storage devices DO NOT need to complete a 3-pass binary overwrite or pay a fee to Surplus Property to perform this task.
Surplus Property will purge data from University computers using one of the following two methods:
1. Utilize a Department of Defense approved data destruction software following DOD guidelines.
2. Destroy the hard drive platters in a manner that does not allow the drive to be rebuilt.
However, UW departments must practice due diligence by deleting all files prior to surplusing their equipment, especially files which contain confidential data, such as personnel, patient, legal, or student information.
Departments will no longer be required to complete the form titled: “Notice of Computer Equipment Electronic Storage Device Cleaning”.
