As a member institution of the Association of American Universities, the University of Washington honors the May 1 deadline in the recruitment of faculty members from other institutions. Since late and sudden departures of personnel assigned to provide instruction or to lead in research in one institution may well do more to impair the effectiveness of that institution than is justified by the gain of the institution extending the offer, the Association suggested that a reasonable approach for both the institutions and the faculty members would be to consider offers made or pending on May 1, or thereafter, to be effective normally only after the intervention of an academic year. The University of Washington administration requests that this policy be respected in undertaking negotiation with faculty members of other institutions.
