A reverse is a printing term for type that is created when the background is printed in ink and the type isn't. The type then becomes the color of the paper

This is an eye-catching way to highlight text without the expense of using an additional color of ink. The example you see here is of some type in a purple box. The publication is printed on white paper so the type is white.
