Preparing Mail for Pickup

Mailing Services provides delivery and collection service to major departments on the central, south, east, and west campus, and to most outlying campus addresses. Service to most departments in these areas is once a day; some campus addresses receive twice-per-day delivery.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) provides delivery and collection service to and from Mailing Services several times per day, and to and from some University offices located on city streets once a day. USPS delivers all mail with the University's unique ZIP Code of 98195 to Mailing Services, as well as any University mail with a ZIP Code of 98105 and no street address.

Some departments located on city streets may receive service from both USPS and Mailing Services. USPS service requires the use of a street address with the city ZIP Code 98105 and a USPS approved mail receptacle or acceptance point.

New Mail Pickup and Delivery Service or Change to Existing Service

Requests for new service or for changes in level of service are handled when they are received; existing levels are reviewed periodically. Mailing Services is responsible for determining the appropriate level of service on a case-by-case basis.

Mail Pickup and Delivery Service Outside Normal Service Zones

Mailing Services provides service to major departments on the central, south, east and west campus, and to most outlying campus addresses. Requests for mail pickup and delivery outside the normal service zones are reviewed by Mailing Services on an individual basis. Mailing Services pickup and delivery may be available for a charge, depending on building location, mail volume or number of departments. In some cases, service may need to be provided soley by the United State Postal Service (USPS). Contact Mailing Services with questions concerning mail delivery and collection.

Mail Delivery Times

Routes are arranged by location and anticipated load for efficiency. Delivery/Collection times are posted at each location. Depending on traffic, unusual mail volume, or other unforseen delays, Mailing Services staff may arrive later than the posted time but should not arrive prior to the posted time.

  • Campus Mail - is generally picked up, sorted, and delivered in 24 hours or less. Mail sent to or from outlying medical centers may take up to three days from pickup to delivery.
  • United States Postal Service Mail - incoming USPS Special Services mail is delivered in 24 hours or less. Note: USPS Express mail is not delivered directly by USPS but comes to Mailing Services for processing and delivery. Normally, Mailing Services will deliver USPS Express mail on the next regular delivery run.

For direct delivery and for delivery to residence halls, particularly on weekends, Mailing Services recommends that correspondents be advised to send critical items by another overnight carrier such as DHL Worldwide Express, or Federal Express.

Other incoming USPS mail is processed and delivered within 24-48 hours of receipt. Incompletely addressed mail will delay delivery.

  • Private Carriers - items arriving by private overnight and package carriers such as DHL Worldwide Express, Federal Express, and United Parcel Service are delivered directly when a complete delivery address (including building and room number) has been provided. Insufficient address information may cause items to be misdelivered, delayed, or returned to the sender by the carrier.
