NEW - 13-Ounce Mail Rule to Take Effect July 30

Starting Monday, July 30th, all personal mail that weighs over 13 ounces and uses stamps has to be hand delivered to a employee at the U.S. Postal Services retail counter at any area Post Office. All mail metered through UW Mailing Services will be unaffected by this change. Any mail that weighs over 13 ounces and is placed inside blue Postal pick-up boxes or any other mail pick-up/drop-off location would be returned to the sender.

 

Copy Centers Go Green

UW Copy Centers are now using 100% post-consumer recycled paper. The transition from the 30% recycled to 100% recycled stock began on June 4th with plans to have all copy centers switched out by July 1st.

POSTAL BULLETIN - SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES

The USPS reports it will be mostly business as usual for southern California's mail delivery networks as of 10/26/07. Mail being send to homes, business, state and government agencies affected by the wildfires will be delivered to all available addresses not effected by the wildfires. The USPS also reported for those addresses damaged or destroyed by the wildfires, that those recipients will be able to pick-up mail from their closest Post Office. UW Mail Services expects minimum delays for most delivery locations in California per this new information from the U.S. Postal Services. We will update if conditions change.

Tainted Mail Alert

The FBI has issued a release informing the public that tainted letters have been sent to some television media outlets. The writer is accusing them of exploiting women by the way they cover sports. The first letters were mailed in 2004 from Portland and more were sent in 2006 and 2007 from Seattle and Chicago.

Overnight Express Mail Delays/Cancellations due to weather

To ensure your UPS, FedEx or DHL Overnight Express mail and package(s) get picked up, Mailing Services recommends that you contact the vendor of your choice prior to placing your important documents or parcels in any express shipping pick-up box in and around the University of Washington. Items can also be dropped off directly to Mailing Services if you are concerned a pick-up box may be skipped.

Pick up's can be made earlier due to current or approaching inclement weather or cancelled entirely with little or no notice. You are welcome to call Mailing Services at 206.543.8758 directly or email: mailserv@u.washington.edu to find out if a pick-up route has been altered, re-routed, or cancelled due to extreme winter storms.

Absentee Ballot Postage

Absentee Voting Ballots weigh just over 1 oz this year, so an additonal .24 cents will be needed for mailing. King County Elections officials won't be picking up the tab if insufficient postage is applied. Total cost needed to mail each Absentee Ballot is .63 cents for the estimated 1.1 oz mail piece. Addendum: King County now says it will cover the additional postage should a voter forget to apply the additional postage. New Postal Rates Go into Effect Jan. 8

The U.S. Postal Service will increase most postal rates and fees by approximately 5.4 percent across-the-board to take effect January 8th. Among the rate adjustments – the first since 2002 – the single piece rate for First Class Mail will increase from 37 cents to 39 cents, and the postcard rate will increase by one cent to 24 cents.

 

Power Outage at Publications Services 12/28

Capital Projects Office has notified Publications Services that due to Seattle City Light labor issues, a power outage to our bldg. will occur on Wed. Dec. 28. The power shut down is needed to make the final connection to the nearby Research and Technology bldg. The power shut off will begin at 1:00 pm and could last until 5:00 pm, but hopefully it will be for a shorter duration. The west entrance to Publications Services will be closed during this time until power is restored.
