The hours of operation for these uniformed security guards are 6:00 pm-2:00 am, 7 days week. Although aiding primarily on foot, the guards have a minivan available to assist when needed. In addition, they are equipped to help people, with proper identification, who cannot get into their offices, areas or vehicles. They also can assist with jump starts for dead batteries, and are extra eyes and ears in parking lots and other UW facilities. The University of Washington Police Department contracts with other University departments to provide such services as managing, supervising, equipping, scheduling, and dispatching. Most security guards, however, are employed by their home department and are not employed by the police department.
Hourly security guards are an exception. The hourly security guards are employed by the University of Washington Police Department. They are used to "fill in" for full-time employees for vacations, sick time, compensatory time, and training, and are also used for temporary assignments.
