Message from Chief John N. Vinson, Ph.D.

The University of Washington Police Department is committed to working closely with the community. To that end, the UWPD embraces the philosophy of community policing, which makes use of partnerships and problem-solving techniques to proactively address public safety concerns. By developing relationships, we build community. By collaborating with our community, we solve problems. By solving problems, we make our campus safer for everyone.

Check out some of the community policing programs in place at the UWPD:

Rape Aggression Defense (RAD). Officers teach realistic self-defense techniques to the community. www.washington.edu/admin/police/rad.pdf

Incident Prevention Teams (IPT). These teams conduct emphasis patrols north of campus. Officers address incidents from noise complaints and alcohol violations to breaking up fights and responding to crimes in the area. Social contacts and crime prevention presentations have led to good relationships with the neighborhood.

Bike Patrol. Officers out on bike patrol are more accessible to the public than officers in police cruisers. The bike patrol officers have made good use of their increased social contacts to educate the public about personal safety as well as how to properly secure their belongings.

Crime Prevention Presentations/Safety Surveys. The Crime Prevention Unit presents safety information to groups and conducts surveys to make recommendations for improved building security and cash handling.
