The University of Washington is a beautiful campus. It takes the commitment of our police force, security personnel and the involvement of the community to create a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The UWPD is committed to involving the community in solving crime problems through community policing practices and keeping the community educated as to safe practices to protect yourself and your property. This also requires a commitment from the community in helping us by taking responsibility in reporting crimes, suspicious activities, and practicing good and practical crime prevention techniques.

The Cops Came! Word reached the University of Washington Police Department from Detective Mark Wampler of Louisville, KY about a kid named Max who is at Children's Hospital here in Seattle. Detective Wampler, who has been in contact with Max's father, Sam, said it would thrill Max greatly if a uniform officer would pay him a visit at the hospital. It did not take long for Chief Wittmier and Officer Van Leuven of the UWPD to respond at red alert speed. They gathered up some goodies and headed to the hospital. Max was then presented with gifts and things to play with, and even received his own badge and patch. "After what I can describe as a tortuous time of bandage removal from his dialysis tubing, this was just what Max needed to cheer him up," said Max's father, Sam. "Look at that big smile on Max's face!" This is a side of police work that brings joy to all. Serving the community is just as big a part of policing as keeping our citizens safe.
