In the most general terms, layoff is the elimination or reduction in percent time of a position for reasons like lack of funds, lack of work, or reorganization. However, each employment category and/or bargaining unit has its own specific definition for what constitutes a layoff, the procedures that must be followed to initiate a layoff, and the options an employee facing layoff may have. It is therefore important that if you are facing the possibility of layoff, you understand the procedures that apply to your specific situation. The links at the right of this page provide information for employees facing layoff.
If you are an employee facing layoff and have not already spoken with your Human Resources Consultant (HRC), you should do that. Your HRC will explain and answer your questions about the layoff process.
