Compensation at the University of Washington goes beyond salary. The UW offers a vast range of benefits—from the traditional to those offered by other premier employers to those that are truly unique to working at the UW. The Resource—UWHR's e-newsletter—keeps you informed of all of these offerings so that you can make the most out of your UW employment.

Your Benefits

DCAP Grace Period
Did you have a Dependent Care Assistance Program (DCAP) account last year? If so, you must submit outstanding claims for the year to Flex-Plan Services no later than March 31. If you don't file claims by that date, your account will be closed and any balance remaining will be forfeited to the Washington State Health Care Authority (HCA). Once the money is forfeited, you will not be able to claim it. Learn more about DCAP.

FSA Grace Period
Did you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) through December 31, 2014? If so, you have a 2½ month grace period—from January 1 through March 15, 2015—to incur claims against your FSA through Flex-Plan Services. All eligible FSA expenses for services provided from January 1 through March 15, 2015, should be submitted to Flex-Plan no later than March 31, 2015 so they can automatically process claims against the 2014 plan year or until your account balance reaches zero. If your claim exceeds the available funds from the 2014 plan year, and you are enrolled in a 2015 FSA, you can submit excess claim amounts to Flex-Plan Services. Remember, if you elected the Consumer-Directed Health Plan with a Health Savings Account for plan year 2015, you were required to incur services, file claims, and receive reimbursements for 2014 FSA expenses by December 31, 2014. Learn more about FSA.

Tender Loving Care Program Discontinued!
UW WorkLife has recently learned from Virginia Mason that they are discontinuing their Tender Loving Care program as of March 31, 2015. TLC has provided much needed care for the children of many of our faculty, staff, and students, and we’ve enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the TLC staff. Unfortunately, this decision was out of our hands. We are actively working to find alternative options to this program and we hope to have potential solutions soon. For more information, please contact Director of WorkLife and Childcare Access Amy Hawkins.

Take the Earth Day Challenge
Make Washington greener and more livable! Participate in the Earth Day Challenge from April 13-24. The Challenge is presented to UW faculty, staff, and students by the UW Combined Fund Drive and EarthShare Washington, and it supports 35 premier conservation groups doing great work right here in Washington.

You can participate in three ways. Make a one-time donation to one of the 35 conservation groups or to EarthShare Washington. Or create a challenge team and pick a volunteer activity. Track your volunteer hours, and each hour counts as a $10 donation towards UW's goal. The third way to get involved is to “Do Your Share” where you decide on one change you’ll make to help the environment and post a picture or a 6-second Vine video of you doing it!

Find a range of volunteer opportunities on the UWCFD volunteer page.

UW to Continue with Semi-Monthly Pay in Workday
Due to many complexities in UW’s pay practices, along with challenges in reporting employee compensation on a monthly basis to the State, the HR/Payroll Modernization project will not require the move to a biweekly pay cycle. Rather, the University will maintain a semi-monthly pay frequency in Workday. The pay frequency for all UW employees will remain the same as it is now, occurring on the 10th and 25th of each month. Learn more about this decision and next steps.

Walk Safely at Night
Concerned about walking alone on campus at night? Three services are available to you:

  • NightRide—Free with a U-PASS, NightRide shuttles operate weekdays during the academic year (excluding University holidays) from 8 p.m.-1:40 a.m. All shuttles are wheelchair accessible and operate every 20-30 minutes. Download the Ride Systems app from the iOS or Google Play stores.
  • Husky NightWalk—A walking escort for students, staff, and faculty. A uniformed security guard provides a safety walk to and from campus locations between 6:30 p.m.-2 a.m. year-round. Hours vary during months of later darkness. Call 206-685-WALK to request an escort.
  • UW Medical Center Public Safety Escorts—UWMC public safety officers will escort UWMC employees from the main entrance on the third floor to nearby parking lots daily from 3:30 p.m.-6 a.m. From the same third floor location, a free van service is available weekdays from 5 p.m.-1:30 a.m. For more information, contact the UWMC security officer at 206-598-5555.
