While the University has had to occasionally suspend certain operations, the University of Washington never actually closes because many units, such as Harborview and University of Washington Medical Centers, the University Police, Facilities Services, Housing and Food Services, etc. provide essential services that must continue to function.

It is each employee's responsibility to know how to check on the operational status of the University and of their department.
In units that provide "essential services," the supervisors or managers inform employees of their responsibilities should the University suspend operations.
