CONTENTS
Professional & Organizational Development's classes are designed for employees of the University of Washington. All UW faculty and staff may register for POD programs, courses, and events. This includes employees of UW Seattle, UW Tacoma, UW Bothell, UWMC, HMC, and UW employees at other locations (Children's Hospital, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the VA, etc.).
Non-UW employees may be enrolled in most quarterly courses, seminars, and workshops on a space-available basis. Registration from non-UW employees will be accepted no sooner than four weeks prior to the start of a course.
Non-UW employees will be charged the listed fee plus 15.6% per course due to institutional overhead. See Fees & Payment section for details.
Registration for POD courses requires a UW NetID, available through POD. If you are not affiliated with the UW, please contact our office for instructions (phone 206-543-1957 or e-mail pod@uw.edu).
Under the UW Release Time Policy, UW employees may be provided with release time necessary to participate in training programs that assist employees in learning new job skills, improving job performance, and increasing promotional opportunities.

You are automatically placed on the waiting list if a course is full when we receive your registration, except if you are paying by credit card. Those paying by credit card must use a UW budget number to be placed on the waiting list. You will be notified before the course starts if space becomes available. Many courses fill quickly; we encourage you to register as early as possible.
Fees vary according to the course. In general:
Refunds will not be issued due to lack of confirmation! Please contact us before the course starts if you have not received e-mail notification and your course starts within the next 5 working days.
If you register for a course and are unable to attend, you must send a written request for refund to Professional & Organizational Development or e-mail pod@uw.edu. Refunds will be granted under the following circumstances:
Exception: In the event of an illness or family emergency that prohibits a participant from attending work and from attending class, a 50% refund will be granted if requested as follows: The participant's supervisor must send an e-mail to pod@uw.edu within seven days of the final class session, requesting a refund and verifying the participant's illness or family emergency.
Events, workshops, seminars, and a limited number of quarterly courses will have a different refund amount and policy. Please see the course description and/or confirmation email for these exceptions, or call Professional & Organizational Development at 206-543-1957.
If you register for a course and are unable to attend, you may send a substitute in your place for no additional fee. Email pod@uw.edu notification indicating the name and UW NetID of the substitute so we can update the course roster. Substitutions are permitted at any time prior to the first day of the course. NOTE: Some courses are exempt from substitutions. Contact Professional & Organizational Development (phone 206-543-1957 or email pod@uw.edu) for more information.
Most courses have a minimum number of spaces that must be filled before the course can be conducted. If this number is not reached, the course may be canceled, and participants will be notified. A full refund will be issued.
Course Completion:
To receive credit for a course, participants must be present in the
classroom for at least 80% of the scheduled class time.
Make-up sessions are no longer available for Professional & Organizational Development courses.
Space availability, room size, and instructional design determine maximum course size.
Professional & Organizational Development courses may not be audited.
The Professional Staff Organization offers limited scholarship support for Professional Staff. For more information please view the PSO web site.
Professional & Organizational Development no longer facilitates transfers from one class to another or transfers from one quarter to another. Please follow guidelines in the Refunds & Withdrawals section.
Professional & Organizational Development does not allow individuals to challenge courses or to receive credit toward certificates, courses, or other training programs for skills already developed through life or work experience.
Training records for UW employees are maintained by POD. A training record includes:
Courses taken through other UW training offices such as Harborview Medical Center, Computing & Communications, and Environmental Health & Safety are not included in your Professional & Organizational Development record.
Training history requests for training completed prior to Summer Quarter 2004 must be e-mailed to pod@uw.edu. Training histories from Summer 2004 to the present can be individually accessed here.
We recommend that training records be kept in employee or departmental files and updated by individuals as additional courses are completed.
For directions to the course location listed on your confirmation letter, please see a UW Campus Map. We also have a main training location in Roosevelt Commons.
We use many locations across campus for our courses, so please check your confirmation email for details. If the course you registered for begins in the next few days, and you have not received a confirmation email with location information, please call Professional & Organizational Development at 206-543-1957.
POD courses and events are in UW Seattle campus locations unless otherwise indicated on the confirmation email.
Course times may change occasionally. Please read your confirmation carefully for any changes. If a course location is changed, Professional & Organizational Development will notify all registered participants before the course start date, and will send out new confirmation emails.
Completed registrations and payments for courses and programs are accepted on a first-come, first-registered basis. Registering online is the fastest way to attempt to secure a space in a course; the online registration system informs you immediately if you have been enrolled in, or placed on the waitlist for, a course. If you register via a paper form, sending the registration form does not guarantee you a space, as the course or event may be full by the time your registration form is received and processed. If a course fills before we process your registration, an e-mail notice will be sent to you and you will be placed on a waiting list for the next available space.
If space is available, a confirmation of your registration will be e-mailed to you with course and location information. No refunds will be issued due to lack of confirmation! Contact Professional & Organizational Development if you have not received an e-mail confirmation and your course starts in the next 5 working days.
Parking and other related expenses are the responsibility of the participant. There is no participant parking at Roosevelt Commons. If you have a UW Parking Permit, you may use your regular parking location while you attend a training session, or you may stop at any gatehouse and request an out-of-area permit to park closer to the training location. If you have a UW Permit you may park in any unrestricted UW parking area after 4 p.m. without first stopping at a gatehouse. All other attendees must stop at a gatehouse to purchase a UW parking permit, utilize pay-on-entry parking options, ride the bus or walk (see the Parking Services and U-PASS websites for more information), or park in other U-District public parking lots or spaces.
To request disability parking accommodations, call Anthony Graziano at 206-221-5330 to obtain information.
