BASIC FUNCTION

Lead others in a word processing unit; confer with persons initiating job requests; review system capabilities and establish deadlines; assess equipment needs and operating systems; confer with vendors to determine improvements to existing equipment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Regularly assign, instruct and check the work of others. Develop cost estimates and turn around time estimates for projects.

TYPICAL WORK

Schedule and prioritize assignments; provide information to staff on matters such as format, spacing, reference coding, etc.;

Develop new techniques/methods in treatment of data; determine most suitable methods for completion of projects and instruct employees accordingly;

Assess equipment needs and operating systems; confer with vendors and users to determine necessary improvements/modifications to existing equipment;

Serve as consultant for persons initiating job requests; explain systems' capabilities; make suggestions for modifications in treatment of data;

Research and develop new applications for word processing systems;

Establish procedures and work methods;

Develop and conduct training programs to train personnel in the use of word processing systems and/or to update their knowledge of and expertise with new equipment or systems;

Develop cost estimates and turn around time estimates;

Maintain records reflecting revenue and expenses;

May assist in the selection and evaluation of employees as required;

May perform the work of Word Processing Operator II;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified

One year of experience as a word processing operator

OR

equivalent education/experience.
