BASIC FUNCTION

Receive and route incoming calls on telephone switching system serving an institution and teaching hospital or medical center.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Single class - no series.

Within established guidelines, provide multiple communications services such as radio paging, two-way radio or public address system. Implement institution/hospital security and emergency procedures.

TYPICAL WORK

Receive and route incoming telephone calls to appropriate departments or personnel; place local and long distance calls; transfer calls; record and relay messages via telephone or paging facilities;

Maintain familiarity with security and emergency procedures; initiate necessary coordination and action; monitor alarm systems;

Maintain locator files; locate personnel by radio paging, two-way radio, public address, etc.;

Answer requests for information; assist callers by determining nature of business involved;

Operate MEDCON call directors; transfer calls as appropriate; maintain records and statistics related to MEDCON calls;

May perform clerical duties including some typing;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified

High School Diploma, or GED Certificate; AND one year of experience as a Telephone Communications Operator, or equivalent. Six months of additional qualifying experience may substitute for required education.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
