CLINICAL TECHNOLOGIST LEAD

BASIC FUNCTION

Lead Clinical Technologists; evaluate the performance of fellows, residents and students; develop and evaluate methodologies and procedures.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Regularly assign, instruct and check the work of others. Lead the professional technical work performed by Clinical Technologists in a section or division of a clinical laboratory and coordinate development and evaluation of new laboratory tests and procedures.

TYPICAL WORK

Evaluate and document the performance of post-doctoral fellows, residents, medical students, and medical technology students during training;

Review and evaluate test results; consult with physicians concerning critical or abnormal findings;

Assure quality control standards are met and documented; troubleshoot methods and instrumentation;

Develop and evaluate new methodologies; write, review and revise technical procedures;

Consult with Clinical Laboratory Supervisor and faculty director in matters relating to purchasing, budgeting and cost analysis; inform faculty of unusual technical problems and help establish laboratory policies;

Coordinate efforts with the Laboratory Safety Officer in ensuring a safe working environment;

Perform duties of Clinical Technologist II;

May provide input to the supervisor in the interviewing, hiring and evaluation of new employees; may counsel section or division staff and recommend disciplinary action to the supervisor when necessary;

May develop and implement diagnostic algorithms for specimen analysis;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology with a curriculum accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association AND three years of professional experience including one year as a Clinical Technologist II or equivalent AND Certification with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or equivalent, or certification with a special organization field appropriate to the laboratory division
