BASIC FUNCTION

Supervise Financial Services Specialists and/or other assigned staff; ensure compliance with regulatory agency or third-party pay or requirements, and direct the operation of a Medical Assistance/Medicaid application or patient financial counseling unit.

DISGTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary actions.

Ensure compliance with regulatory agency and third-party pay or requirements and hospital policies and procedures. Direct the operation of a Medical Assistance/Medicaid application or patient financial counseling unit such as reviewing referrals of unsponsored patients and assigning caseloads; monitoring progress of assigned cases; resolving procedural errors; developing and implementing policies and procedures; reviewing and resolving patient complaints, and representing the unit to regulatory agencies or third-party pay or staff.

TYPICAL WORK

Supervise assigned staff ensuring compliance with regulatory agency and third-party pay or requirements and hospital policies and procedures;

Review referrals of unsponsored patients and assign caseloads based on perceived complexity; monitor progress of assigned cases;

Review work in process, completed applications and required documentation for compliance with department, hospital, regulatory agency and third-party pay or policies;

Resolve procedural errors of regulatory agency staff;

Advise patients and family members in accessing hospital and community services by consulting and making referrals to social workers, patient care coordinators, nursing liaisons, outside agencies and legal services;

Evaluate, develop and implement policies and procedures for a patient financial services unit; recommend appropriate changes to hospital policies;

Review and resolve patient complaints;

Represent the unit to regulatory agency or third-party pay or staff; attend Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) community meeting;

Advise hospital staff regarding policies and eligibility criteria for insurance and medical assistance programs;

Review and interpret new insurance and regulatory agency requirements; identify topics for and develop training sessions;

Represent patients at fair hearing procedures;

Prepare administrative reports;

May perform the work of Financial Services Specialists;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS - Classified Non-Union

Two years of experience as a Financial Services Specialist II

OR

Equivalent education/experience

New Class: 12-7-90
