Nanny Share Network

UNDERSTAND

The Nanny Share Network provides a non-commercial service to assist UW faculty, staff and students in identifying possible nanny sharing arrangements. If you locate a potential nanny sharing partner, you are responsible for contacting the person directly, for developing the nanny sharing arrangement and for employment of the nanny.

State Licensing Requirements

Important Note: The State of Washington may require you to obtain a license for a "family child care home" when two or more families hire a person (nanny) to provide care to non-related children at the same time. If you are considering a nanny sharing arrangement where the nanny will care for children from more than one family at a time, you are responsible for understanding the State's licensing requirements and for determining if they apply to you. At a minimum, you should contact the State of Washington’s Department of Early Learning.

Taxes

According to the Internal Revenue Service, having a babysitter or nanny come into your home to care for your children makes them a household employee. You may need to pay social security, Medicare, federal unemployment tax, and withhold federal income tax. To find out more, see the Household Employer's Tax Guide. There are also numerous companies that will assist you with nanny taxes for a fee.

You may wish to provide health insurance benefits to your nanny. The Washington Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) can help.
