UNDERSTAND

Graduate appointees, Fellows and Trainees in eligible positions can participate in the Graduate Appointee Insurance Program (GAIP). The UW pays the monthly premium for student appointees with eligible positions.

You must be enrolled for at least 10 credits for the quarter, and your position must be 50% FTE or greater, and paid on five of the six paydays of the coverage period. Use the charts below to determine if your position is eligible for GAIP.

* Note: GSA is Graduate Student Appointment with benefits; GSO is Graduate Student Appointment with OASI benefits (i.e. reduced credit hours).

** Job Code 0854, Graduate Research Student Assistant (GRSA), is limited to appointments during the summer quarter only. This job code may not be used during fall, winter or spring quarters.

Eligible Fellows & Trainees with Stipends

The UW also pays the monthly premium for Fellows and Trainees in eligible positions. You must be enrolled for at least 10 credits per quarter, and your position must pay at least $800 per month, and you must be paid on at least five of the six paydays of the coverage period.

The following tables provide the titles and earning types, which in combination with the appointment and academic requirements constitute an eligible position:

*SWB refers to Stipend with Benefits. SWT is the equivalent of SWB for non-resident aliens.

Self-Pay Eligibility

The self-pay option allows you to participate in the GAIP benefits by enrolling and paying premiums directly to the Welfare and Pension Administrative Service (WPAS). Review all self-pay information.

Dependent Eligibility

Students who are eligible and enrolled in this program may also enroll eligible dependents. The same dependent eligibility rules apply to all four quarters. An eligible dependent is defined as:

Enrolling Dependents Mid-Quarter

Students may add dependents mid-quarter within 60 days upon experiencing one of the following "Life Changes".

To enroll your dependent, go to the enrollment web page. After you have submitted the change online, call WPAS at 206-441-7574, ext. 3306 to verify that your new dependent has been added to your plan. Once this is done, WPAS will contact the UW to update your status.

Summer Quarter Eligibility

Eligibility Based on Prior Coverage
If you had UW-paid GAIP coverage for fall, winter, and spring quarters, you are eligible for UW-paid GAIP coverage for summer quarter, regardless of student and/or employment status.
Eligibility Based on Employment
The UW pays the monthly premium for student appointees with eligible summer quarter positions. To be eligible, you must be enrolled in at least two credits in at least one session; the position must be 50% or greater FTE, and paid on two paydays of Session A only, or two paydays of Session B; and you must hold an eligible title (Eligible Graduate Appointees above).
Appointment of Fellows & Trainees with Stipends
The UW pays the monthly premium for Fellows and Trainees in eligible summer quarter positions. To be eligible, you must be enrolled in at least two credits in at least one session; the position must be paid at least $800 per month, and paid on two pay days of Session A only, or two paydays of Session B, or three paydays for Sessions A and B combined; and you must hold an eligible title (Eligible Fellows and trainees above).

Self-Pay During the Summer

If you held a UW-paid GAIP-eligible appointment in spring, you can continue your GAIP coverage on a self-pay basis by contacting WPAS directly in July to enroll.

If you held a UW-paid GAIP-eligible appointment in fall or winter, subsequently lost your UW-paid coverage, enrolled in the self-pay option at the time you lost your coverage, you can continue self-paying through the month of September.

Enrollment Deadlines for Adding/Dropping Dependents

You will be notified via the summer quarter memo of the enrollment deadline for summer quarter. However, it will typically be on or around June 20.

Premium Payments

If you are eligible for summer quarter coverage based on prior coverage, dependent premiums must be paid in full for the entire quarter directly to WPAS at the beginning of summer quarter. If you also have a GAIP-eligible appointment for summer quarter, you must still pay WPAS; there will be no payroll deductions. It is your responsibility to ensure that your dependent premium is paid. If you do not receive an invoice from WPAS by the middle of July, you need to contact WPAS at 206-374-9439 (ask for the individual who handles dependent payments for GAIP).
