Long-term disability insurance (LTD) replaces a portion of your income if you are unable to work due to illness or injury (see Covered Events below). This page describes the optional long-term disability insurance program, MedPlus Advantage Program, sponsored by the American Medical Association (AMA). This program is available to UW Residents and Fellows, and the policy plan year runs from July 1 to June 30.
As a state employee you also have the option of enrolling in this program or the optional PEBB long-term disability insurance program available to all faculty and staff. When considering long-term disability insurance you should consider which program would be best for you before you make an enrollment decision.
Medical Residents and Fellows in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy at the University of Washington are eligible for this plan.
Note: There is a 12-month waiting period for pre-existing conditions evident 180 days prior to enrolling.
Total Disability: $2,500 flat per month during all years of residency.
Total & Permanent Disability: $5,000 monthly for first 12 months. At 12 months the prognosis must be reconfirmed. Once reconfirmed, there is a $5000 monthly payment during all years of Residency or Fellowship, plus a one-time lump sum payment of $5,000.
Additional Income Benefit Reduction - Total Disability: If your insurance payment plus other income would exceed $5,000, your insurance payment is reduced so that your total income does not exceed $5000.
Additional Income Benefit Reduction - Total & Permanent Disability: If your insurance plus other income would exceed $10,000, your insurance payment is reduced so that your total income does not exceed $10,000.
Loan Payoff Benefit - Repayment of up to $200,000 of eligible debt.

To enroll, complete the Resident & Fellows LTD online enrollment form.
Claims are filed by contacting Parker, Smith & Feek at 425-709-3600. They will notify the UW Benefits Office so that all of your UW benefits can be coordinated.
If you wish to cancel your LTD coverage, please send a hard copy letter to the UW Benefits Office indicating your wish to terminate coverage. Please include your Employee Identification Number (EID) or Social Security number and signature on the letter. Your LTD benefit coverage will terminate the end of the month in which UW Benefits receives the notification.
The MedPlus Advantage Program coverage ends when your appointment as a Resident or Fellow ends.
To continue LTD insurance coverage when your Residency or Fellowship ends, please contact Parker, Smith & Feek at 425-709-3600 and ask for their Benefits Department.
If you will be continuing employment with the UW following your Residency or Fellowship, you must contact the UW Benefits Office to ask for your payroll deductions to stop. Notify us of your appointment change by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
