Data Sources:
All data are from the Payroll file as of October, 1997, and reflect the actual salary level of faculty as of that date.
Personnel Included:
All full-time regular teaching faculty, as defined by the appointment occupation code (i.e., departmental chairs and/or directors, professors, associate professors, assistant professors and instructors), are included in the survey. Specific occupation codes included in the survey are shown in Appendix A. Faculty members with both regular teaching appointments and other types of appointments are included providing the regular teaching appointment is at least 49.9% of the total appointment. If a faculty member is included in the survey, the total salary and FTE for that faculty member is included in the faculty member's home department regardless of budget source or work distribution. Research, clinical, affiliate and adjunct faculty as well as deans, associate and assistant deans are excluded from the survey. Faculty on sabbatical leave are reported at their regular salaries and FTEs.
Data Elements Listed:
College--This is the name of the college which has responsibility for the fiscal unit represented.
Department Name or Title--This is the official name of the fiscal unit.
CIP Code--This code is from the Department of Education's published booklet entitled "Classification of Instructional Programs." The CIP Code is indicated in this analysis in order to facilitate departmental comparison among universities, since the department name alone may not be sufficient. The CIP Code provided represents the "primary" instructional discipline. Secondary CIP Codes are provided to show other discipline specialities of the department.
Nine-Month Faculty--This includes all full-time faculty positions budgeted on a nine-month, nine and one-half month, and ten-month basis. Nine and one-half and ten-month appointments are not converted to a nine-month basis.
Twelve-Month Faculty--This includes all full-time faculty positions budgeted on an eleven-month and twelve-month basis. Eleven- month positions are not converted to a twelve-month basis.
Cash Salaries--These salaries represent the actual amounts paid to faculty and do not include benefits.
High and Low Salaries--These salaries represent the highest and lowest 100% full-time equivalent salaries. (Salary ranges are not used at the University of Washington.) In order to determine the highest and lowest salaries on a comparable basis, part-time appointments are always adjusted to 100% by dividing the part-time actual salary by the percentage of time.
Average Salaries--Average salaries are calculated by dividing the total salaries for a given rank by the FTE number of positions involved.
Health Science Faculty--Faculty salaries in the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry exclude income from professional fees or clinical services. Clinical medicine faculty are excluded.
FTE--Full-time equivalent count represents the percentage of time for which a position is budgeted. Faculty with multiple appointments are included in the home departments.
Age--Average age of faculty by rank calculated on the basis of year of birth, using December 31, 1997 as the report generation date.
Faculty Fringe Benefits:
In the total University (Seattle Campus) summary the fringe benefits have been computed using so-called payroll-load rates. These rates are a composite percentage of the University's employer contribution to fringe benefit programs and are intended to distribute these costs equally throughout the fiscal period. Each major employee category, such as instructional and research faculty, has a single load rate which is adjusted periodically to reflect changes in the contribution rates.
The fringe benefits included in the payroll-load calculations are Group Medical, Dental, Life and Disability Insurance: Permanent University faculty members are enrolled in a medical, dental, life and disability insurance plan. The University contributes $313.06 per month for each faculty member. The insurance plan includes: a comprehensive medical plan, a limited coverage dental plan, $5,000 of Group Life Insurance and $50.00 per month of disability income insurance. Faculty may purchase Group Life Insurance and Group Long Term Disability income insurance above the minimum provided in the basic insurance package.
Retirement::
University faculty participate in the University retirement system, which provides retirements annuity contracts between the participant and the Teacher's Insurance and Annuity Association--College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF). Eligible staff are required to participate in the program upon completion of two years of service. Employer as well as employee contribution rates are as follows:
| Under age 35 | -- | 5.0% of basic | |
| Age 35 and over (effective the January following 35th birthday) | -- | 7.5% of basic annual salary | |
| Age 50 and over (optional) | -- | 10.0% of basic annual salary |
Workman's Compensation and Unemployment Compensation
The University's 1997-98 worker's compensation premium equals .32% of salary. Unemployment compensation is .13% of salary.
Social Security
The University pays the employer's contributions as prescribed by federal law. For this report, the employee social security tax is
calculated as 7.65% for the first $65,400 of salary plus 1.45% of salary in excess of $65,400.
Additionally, there are the following benefits for faculty not included in the payroll load-rate calculation used in the University summary:
State law limits the total salary a faculty member receives from funds to no more than the average of the highest quartile. If the individual secures outside grant support, which is designated for salary purposes, these funds may be applied to increase the faculty member's salary for the period of the leave up to full salary.
