Think 10

What is Think 10?
Starting June 1, 2001, ten-digit dialing will be required for outside local calls made from UW telephones. You should now dial the area code plus number (10-digits) when making local calls outside of campus. Beginning June 1, 2001, dialing only 7-digits will no longer work from UW campus phones. UWMC (598) users are encouraged to begin dialing 10-digits as well, however, the mandatory dialing date does not apply to the UWMC phone system. Five digit dialing for UW phone numbers remains unaffected.

Why is this happening?
Dialing the area code plus number from UW phones is in preparation for Western Washington's eventual change to ten-digit local dialing.

Will this affect calls that I make to campus telephone numbers?
You may continue to dial the last five digits of UW phone numbers when calling from a campus telephone (this is not available from UWMC).

How will calls be forwarded?
If you use the call forwarding feature, be sure to enter 9 plus ten digits if you are forwarding to an outside number such as a cell phone or home phone.

What about our other communications equipment?
Update any preprogrammed numbers to use 9 plus ten digits now. Check: Refer to "Phone Features and Their Use" on the UW Technology Service Center Web site http://www.washington.edu/cac/care/cts.index.html for instructions about reprogramming phone buttons.

Are emergency calls handled differently?
Emergency calls to 9-911 do not change.

Is toll-free calling affected?
Local calls dialed with ten digits are still toll free. In addition, Regional Calling Service lets you dial numbers in area codes 206, 253, and 425 toll free from any UW campus phone. Just dial 9 plus ten digits.

Is this a permanent change?
Area codes are no longer optional. Use dashes or periods to show your unique phone number in print (such as 206-543-2100). Always publish and speak your number with ten digits (area code plus number).

Where can I get more information?
