Transitional Support Program

As part of the Provost's Office commitment to faculty, the Transitional Support Program (TSP) has been established for any professorial level faculty member (including without tenure due to funding and research) to provide additional support.

Program Description

The TSP is available for faculty who are in the midst of major career-threatening crises, such as

Administration

The TSP offers financial support to help faculty members maintain their productivity while experiencing such crises. The funding may be used to provide course release and/or research support.

In some cases, the TSP may be complemented with a tenure/promotion clock extension or other university programs available to help faculty balance work and life. For more information on university work/life programs available to faculty members (e.g. leave policies, eldercare, childcare), view the leave policies or the Work/Life website.

The TSP is administered by the ADVANCE Center for Institutional Change (CIC) and the Provost's office.

Faculty in ADVANCE departments should apply directly through ADVANCE. Faculty in other departments should apply through the ADVANCE Program office which will administer the Program in coordination with the UW Provost's Office.

If your situation changes after you have been awarded a TSP grant, the CIC will reevaluate your award and reserves the right to adjust it to an amount appropriate to the new situation.

If you have questions about the TSP, please contact Professor Eve A. Riskin, Director of the ADVANCE Center for Institutional Change.

Applications

Applications for and inquiries regarding TSP grants are encouraged at any time during the year. The process is designed to be responsive to the emergent nature of personal crises.

This program is an extension of the ADVANCE TSP, which was started in 2001 with National Science Foundation Grant no. SBE=0123552.

At the end of the award period, awardees must be willing to participate in a confidential evaluation process.

To apply for a TSP award, please:

  1. Write a statement of need (1-2 pages) indicating the following:
    • Type of crisis and number of quarters for which you seek support
    • How this support will help maintain your academic career during the crisis
    • Type and amount of support you seek, including a budget
      • Click on Sample Budget in Tools and Forms for example
      • Typical award size: $15,000 (in direct costs)
    • Include your CV and funding record in the application package.
  2. Obtain a letter of support from your department chair.
  3. For personal medical needs, include a letter from the Disability Services Office. Contact the Disability Services Office, 206-543-2624, for questions regarding workplace accommodations.
