African American Literature and Culture

The University of Washington English Department seeks a scholar in African American literature and culture, specializing in an historical period from 1770 to 1940. We are particularly interested in research that engages with slavery and colonialism as elements of a Black Atlantic experience. Position may be filled at the level of Associate Professor (with tenure), Assistant Professor or Acting Assistant Professor (tenure track), depending upon the candidate's qualifications. Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree by the start of appointment. Candidates in the final stages of their Ph.D. program may be appointed on an acting basis. This position is part of a larger departmental hiring initiative in "Comparative colonial, anti-colonial and diasporic literary cultures." Other priority areas in this initiative include Caribbean literatures, histories and politics; South Asian literatures, histories and politics; ecocriticism; Native American literatures, histories and politics.
