Position Details


The University of Washington, Seattle and the College of Education seek to fill a tenure-track nine-month academic year appointment on a full-time basis at the Assistant Professor rank in Literacy Education. The College seeks a scholar with expertise in teaching reading and writing, and with an interest in working with diverse populations in grades 4-12. The College recognizes that literacy is deeply tied to issues of access and equity and is committed to ensuring that its graduates are prepared to help all students achieve literacy proficiency.

Although we are open to a range of research areas and methodological approaches, we hope to add a colleague whose research and teaching address some combination of the following:

Responsibilities would include: (1) conducting research on one or more of the critical areas listed above, (2) teaching courses in the graduate-level teacher education program, as well as other masters and doctoral courses, (3) advising masters and doctoral students, and (4) providing leadership at the district, state, and university levels on issues related to reading and writing instruction in grades 4-12. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.

Candidates should show a demonstrated commitment and intellectual interest in how the College of Education can best work with future and current teachers to meet the needs of all students. They should demonstrate a record of or a strong potential for external research funding. A doctoral degree in education or related field at the time of appointment and experience in K-12 settings is required, including sustained work with teachers. Furthermore, candidates should possess the capacity to conduct, critique, and oversee rigorous research related to adolescent literacy. To support the College’s technology goals, candidates should be familiar with current technologies pertinent to their field for both research and teaching.

The position begins September 16, 2010, contingent upon adequate funding.
