Position Details


The Department of Materials Science and Engineering seeks to fill one new Research Professor Position to begin in autumn or winter quarters 2009.  Candidates will be well-established scholars with a wide network of national and international collaborations and will have a record of published research in the fields of molecular biology, genetics, molecular biomimetics and biomineralization. Candidates are expected to have appropriate background and hands-on experience in combinatorial biology of selecting short peptides with functional properties, using cell and phage expression systems, genetic engineering, biomaterials, bioinformatics, peptide characterization, and purification. The candidates are expected to have directed independent and collaborative research, have had undergraduate and graduate thesis students, set-up molecular biology laboratories, and directed research programs in these areas. The selected faculty is expected to carry our research in several areas of protein-based materials at the NSF-supported MRSEC, Genetically Engineered Materials Science and Engineering, in NIH-funded projects, as well as in several other federal-funded collaborative, research at the UW, and be in a position to write independent and collaborative research proposals to seek additional funding.

Successful applicants will be expected to be involved in innovative and quality research that is well-integrated with training of graduate and undergraduate students.  Participation in the teaching of both undergraduate and graduate courses within the Department is highly encouraged but not required. The Department seeks individuals at the Research Professor rank and a PhD is required.  This is a non-tenure track, full-time position.
