Position Details


The College of the Environment at the University of Washington seeks applications for a Research Assistant or Research Associate Professor in Wildland Fire Science.  This will be a non-tenured position primarily supported on grant and contract awards.  A temporary commitment of teaching dollars will be awarded for a period of three years, possibly extendable, to teach one undergraduate course in wildland fire management (ESRM 420) and one graduate course in fire ecology (CFR 535) per academic year.  The remainder of the annual salary must be generated by research or other forms of self-sustaining funds.  A Ph.D. is required. 

Knowledge of fire science and/or wildland fire behavior and management is essential.  The applicant will be expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program in their area of specialization, which may be broadly defined:  fire science, fire ecology, wildland fire management, fire-global warming implications, carbon sequestration, fuels and fire modeling, or any other related interests.  Opportunities exist to develop cross-college collaborations, cross-campus collaborations, and off-campus collaborations with research partners (example: USFS Fire Laboratories in Seattle, Missoula, and Riverside) and Federal, state, and NGO organizations, ranging from local to international.
