Tenured position as Associate Professor or Professor to start September 15, 2009. We seek a Department Chair who will lead our faculty to our next level of excellence and facilitate the development of an energetic and top ranking academic unit in one of the top research public universities in the country. Our department was established in 1959 and encompasses five graduate and undergraduate degree programs, along with highly innovative and diverse research activities, in a multidisciplinary college focused on the built environment. We seek a colleague who will take responsibility for leadership and administration of the Department while at the same time actively contributing to our teaching and research agenda. Minimum qualifications include a doctorate in planning or a closely related field; evidence of scholarly, professional or creative achievement meriting faculty appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor; university teaching experience; and demonstrated administrative experience and ability. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. Also preferred are professional planning experience and AICP membership.
The Department of Urban Design and Planning is one of four departments in the College of Built Environments. Degree programs under its management include a B.A. in Community, Environment, and Planning, a Master of Urban Planning (MUP), a Master of Strategic Planning for Critical Infrastructures, and an Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Urban Design and Planning. A Master of Science in Real Estate will be launched in Autumn 2009. The Department has 18 tenured or tenure-track faculty and several affiliate faculty from the professional community. There are currently about 135 graduate students (90 in the MUP program) and 60 undergraduates. The Department has established specializations in Land Use and Infrastructure Planning (including transportation), Real Estate, Environmental Planning, Urban Design, and Historic Preservation Planning. The last two are interdisciplinary certificate programs collaborative with the departments of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Research centers include the Northwest Center for Livable Communities, the Urban Form Lab, the Urban Ecology Research Lab, the Institute for Hazards Mitigation Planning and Research, and the Runstad Center for Real Estate Studies.
The Department emphasizes community-engaged learning and scholarship by drawing on the extensive resources of the university, and the laboratory provided by the rapidly evolving urban, rural, and natural environment of metropolitan Seattle and the Puget Sound Region. Our vision is to advance urban planning research and practice in the region, the nation, and the world. We value sustainability, livability, economic and ecological vitality, and social justice. Active programs extend to other parts of the U.S., from Alaska to Louisiana, and to the world beyond, including a broad set of exchanges in European and Pacific Rim countries.
