Position Details


The University of Washington Bothell invites applications and nominations for the position of Professor and Director of the Education Program, (100% time).  Currently offering post-baccalaureate teacher education programs, an undergraduate education minor, and a Master of Education degree, the program expects rapid growth in the next few years as new programs are developed and as campus outreach to the rapidly growing North Puget Sound region continues.  Our faculty are committed to offering teacher education programs that advance the public democratic purposes of education in a diverse society, and we seek a colleague and leader who can advance these commitments while facilitating program development and innovation in partnership with PK-12 schools and other parts of the University.  University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.

The Bothell campus of the University of Washington is located approximately 20 miles northeast of Seattle.  UW Bothell serves approximately 2000 traditional and non-traditional students and also offers degrees in Business, Computing and Software Systems, Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, and Nursing.  Since its opening in 1990, UWB has offered creative, interdisciplinary curricula and a dynamic community of multicultural teaching.  It is presently engaged in planning for significant outreach to a wider region in the North Puget Sound and anticipates continuing growth in programs and enrollment.  For more information on UW Bothell, visit the campus Web site at http://www.uwb.edu.

Qualifications:
We seek an experienced educational and academic leader with the administrative and interpersonal abilities to lead the Education Program through what we expect to be a time of rapid program development.  Essential qualifications for the position include leadership experience in teacher education and masters-level education programs, an earned doctorate in an appropriate field, the academic qualifications necessary for appointment at the rank of full professor, and familiarity with K-12 settings.  We expect that the successful candidate will also have accomplishments in more than one of the following areas:  development and approval of innovative programs, leadership for program review, assessment of student learning, development of successful partnerships with PK-12 schools, and external relations.

Responsibilities:
The position’s multifaceted responsibilities create an exceptional opportunity for a skilled administrator who is interested in program innovation in service of educational equity and quality. The Director participates in the campus-wide decision-making and community outreach typical of a Dean, while also providing the leadership typical of a Department Chair.  Responsibilities include planning and allocating program resources, collaborating with the faculty in program and curriculum development, leading partnerships with PK-12 schools and community organizations, helping the faculty prepare for program reviews, and representing the institution with external groups.  As the campus expands its presence in the North Puget Sound region, the Director will provide leadership for off-site programs and for efforts to increase the flow of students through middle and high school and into college, with a particular focus on expanding access to science, math, and technology fields.  A portion of the director’s time is also committed to teaching in the Education program.

Appointment:  
Position becomes effective August 2009.  Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
