Position Details


The University of Washington (UW), College of Forest Resources (CFR), invites applications for the position of Professor and Director of the University of Washington Botanic Gardens (UWBG).  The Director will provide administrative, academic, and development leadership of UWBG.  UWBG has a notable reputation for horticulture, restoration, urban forestry, sustainable urbanizing ecosystems, conservation, and plant collections. The Director will build and maintain collaborative relationships with other UW programs, regional to international academic institutions, and public and private agencies and organizations.

The Director will lead efforts to establish and implement highly visible programmatic and partnership initiatives, and must be a superb executive with demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, communication, planning, and fiscal skills, as well as abilities in facilities management, budget planning, and fund acquisition through grants and private gifts. UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The Director is expected to teach, choosing from a variety of undergraduate, graduate, and distance-learning venues, and conduct research of relevance to the UWBG mission.

UWBG facilities include the Center for Urban Horticulture, which contains the Hyde Herbarium and Miller Library; the Union Bay Gardens; the Union Bay Natural Area; and the Washington Park Arboretum (WPA). The WPA is a 230-acre city park/arboretum with support and management through a three-way partnership among the UW, the City of Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Arboretum Foundation. Numerous UW faculty, a permanent staff, and a strong volunteer program are associated with UWBG.

Appointment is at the rank of full professor; salary and benefits are competitive.  This position is a tenured, 9-month, state-funded faculty position. As Director, two additional months of salary and 11 months of administrative supplement are provided.
The disciplinary focus is open, but applicants in horticulture, arboriculture, urban forestry, ecology, botany, or related fields are encouraged to apply.  Applicants should have attained the highest academic rank in their field.
