Salary supplements are awarded for a variety of reasons including temporary additional responsibilities and administrative duties. All salary supplements must be approved by AHR prior to entering in the payroll system. Supplements include:
An Administrative Supplement (ADS) is awarded to faculty who are appointed to the position of Dean, Chancellor, Chair, or Director of a school/college/campus or an academic department or program.
The Dean/Chancellor of the school/college/campus prepares a formal request to appoint a faculty member via documentation to the Provost. Once approval has been received the ADS, and title change if appropriate, can be entered in OPUS (online payroll update system). The approval must be cited in the "notes" section of the PERM (post entry review message).
A Temporary Supplement (TPS) is awarded to faculty who are requested to assume temporary additional responsibilities. The unit may request approval via email to acadpers@u.washington.edu. The email must include a description of the services to be provided, the duration of service, and amount. Once approval has been received the TPS can be entered in OPUS. The approval email must be pasted in the "notes" section of the PERM.
An Endowed Supplement (ENS) may be awarded to faculty members who have been appointed as Endowed Professor or Chair as allowed under the terms of the endowment. When the action is entered in OPUS the name of the endowment from which the ENS is provided must be cited.
If consistent with funding agency policy, faculty on nine-month academic year appointments may accept grant/contract appointments during the summer for periods normally not to exceed 2.5 months in any one summer.
A faculty member requesting appointment for greater than 2.5 months in any one summer must submit a written statement through the Dean/Chancellor to the Provost, via Academic Human Resources, indicating the intent to devote full-time effort during the summer employment period. It is preferred that this statement be submitted via email and should be addressed to the unit and Dean's/Chancellor's office, and copy the Office of Academic Human Resources, on behalf of the Provost.
