The University of Washington Department of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), together with the DO-IT program, is offering a Summer Academy for Advancing Deaf & Hard of Hearing in Computing. This program is especially designed for deaf and hard of hearing students with skills in math or science who may be considering computing as a major.

CSE and the DO-IT program have an outstanding opportunity for a temporary Tutor/Coordinator. The Tutor/Coordinator will support the students in the Summer Academy, and will coordinate with the appropriate CSE faculty and staff.

The person hired will be offered room and board on campus for the duration of the appointment and up to 5 tuition-free credits from the UW's summer class catalog. If the person hired does not live in the Seattle area, the department is willing to pay the expense of coach round-trip airfare traveling to and from Seattle at the start and end of the appointment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide tutoring services to the students in the Academy, specifically in computer programming and animation courses. Provide psychological support and help students develop social, self-determination, and self-advocacy skills.
  • Organize Academy Base (home room) sessions occurring no more than three times a week with the students in the Academy. These sessions are designed to provide a time to "check in" with the students in the Academy, and coordinate visits by successful deaf and hard of hearing role models.
  • Participate in Summer Academy sponsored activities, including, but not limited to, field trips to industries related to computing and animation, group tours, and social events such as Deaf Community Night and Community Premiere Night.

Requirements:

  • At least 2 years of college with emphasis on computer science or related field.
  • Competency in advanced mathematics and computing.
  • Experience and ability to work with youth who are deaf and hard of hearing.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture issues.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Condition of Employment:

Final applicants will be asked to submit a copy of their college transcript.

A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification may be required prior to hire.
