Thank you for your interest in the Advancing Deaf & Hard of Hearing in Computing Summer Academy.

We are looking for the top deaf and hard of hearing students in the United States who are interested in math or science, and have a strong interest in computing. The Summer Academy is designed to showcase all things computing to deaf and hard of hearing students who may be considering computer science, computer engineering, information science, information systems or information technology as a career, either in industry or academia.

Admission is very competitive, based on an assessment of potential ability in computing and enthusiasm to participate in an intensive experience. When filling out the application form, treat it as if you were applying for college or your dream job. Tell us what motivates you, why this is important to you, why you are interested in computing. A few sentences won’t tell us very much. The more information, the better. Again, only the very best applications will be considered.

Students who are accepted will be awarded free tuition, room, board, round trip transportation to Seattle, and participation in sponsored activities.

Students will take a computer programming class for college credit, and participate in a certificated group project in animation.

Up to 10 students from all over the United States will be selected. Enrollment is limited to students accepted through this application process. Again, admission is competitive, and only the highest ranked students will be chosen for admission.

Please note that this is not a summer camp. Instead, it is a challenging academic program from which participants will receive college credits that will become a part of their permanent postsecondary academic record.

Admission is limited to students 16 and over on June 15, 2012. Students ages 16 and 17 are accepted under specific conditions and waivers, with permission of their parents. You must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident of the United States. International students may be accepted if they already have in their possession a valid visa, such as a student visa, that encompasses the dates of the Summer Academy.

The Summer Academy is intended for students ready to enter college (those already in their junior or senior year of high school) or in their freshman, sophomore or junior years of college. Computer majors entering their junior or senior years of college may be interested in available teaching assistant positions if they have considerable computer programming academic and/or work experience. The program is not designed for graduate students or persons considering computing as a second career.

The Summer Academy begins on Friday, June 15, 2012. Classes begin Monday, June 18 and end Friday, August 17. Students will return home on Saturday, August 18 (exceptions can be made for unique situations).

If you have questions about the Summer Academy or this form, please consult the Summer Academy FAQ. If you still have questions, please contact Robert Roth at Advancing Deaf & Hard of Hearing in Computing at accesscomp@u.washington.edu.
