Are there voice recognition programs students can use to do math?

Yes. For example, MathTalk, a software program that can be used with Dragon NaturallySpeaking speech input products, allows students to input via voice math expressions, formulas, and even graphs. MathTalk can be used at basic and advanced math levels and for scientific applications. Its capabilities are useful to students with disabilities who cannot use a standard keyboard.

MathTalk is currently sold in the two versions described below.

MathTalk™/Scientific Notebook™ (MT/SN) powered by MuPad

This version of MathTalk has over 600,000 combinations of voice commands which allow students to:

  • build graphs.
  • evaluate expressions numerically.
  • factor terms and formulas.
  • combine and substitute terms.
  • expand formulas, and
  • simplify and check equations.

MathTalk™/Scientific Workplace™ (MT/SW)

This version of MathTalk has includes the capabilities of MathTalk™/Scientific Notebook™ as well as the added feature of working with LaTeX, the industry standard for mathematics typesetting and hardcopy. This allows students to:

  • create, edit, and typeset mathematics and scientific text easily;
  • integrate mathematics and text in the same environment; and
  • create cross references and footnotes easily.
